Protecting National Identity and Empowering Markets in Post-socialist Contexts

For the post-socialist states of China and Vietnam, cost-based differences in education opportunities are a more recent phenomenon. Any international education institutions were strictly for foreign diplomats; no private education system existed. As those societies became more commercial, marketization also crept into education. Emerging private schools became blended with international schools, and foreign populations demanding international schools also increased. Vietnam and China therefore had similar situations to respond to in dealing with their international schools. In particular, international school expansion raised the question of the extent to which the affluent population would be permitted to gain an education separate from the education system which serves as a central means of socialization into the nation.
